On July 3, 2022, Metallica rocked the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao as part of the Bilbao Bizkaia Rock Day, a festival that brought together thousands of heavy metal fans for an unforgettable event. This performance marked the band’s return to the city after 15 years of absence, since their last concert at Bilbao BBK Live 2007. With a setlist full of classics and an impressive stage performance, the Californian band showed why they remain one of the greatest in the history of metal.
From the start of the concert, Metallica made it clear that the night would be legendary. They opened with “Whiplash,” a song full of speed and aggression that ignited the crowd from the first riff. From there, the band offered a selection of their greatest hits, including:
🔥 “Creeping Death”
🔥 “Enter Sandman”
🔥 “Harvester of Sorrow”
🔥 “Wherever I May Roam”
🔥 “Nothing Else Matters”
🔥 “Master of Puppets” (epic closing of the show)
Each song was sung by the thousands of attendees, who gave themselves completely to the overwhelming energy of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo.
The concert set-up lived up to expectations. An impressive production of lights, giant screens and special effects accompanied the performance, immersing the audience in the raw and powerful atmosphere of Metallica. The thunderous sound of the stadium made the fans vibrate, who enjoyed each riff and guitar solo with intensity.
However, not everything was perfect. During the last song of the show, a sound problem occurred that affected the quality of the closing. Even so, the energy of the band and the dedication of the audience made this inconvenience go almost unnoticed.
The Bilbao Bizkaia Rock Day was a highly successful event, despite the cancellation of Weezer, one of the opening bands, a few hours before the concert. Even so, Metallica managed to make the festival shine with its own light.
Attendees described the concert as an unforgettable experience, highlighting the power of the band and the connection with the public. On social networks, fans shared videos and enthusiastic comments about the performance, while specialized critics praised the solidity of the group and the quality of the show.
Metallica demonstrated once again why they are a heavy metal legend. With a combination of nostalgia and power, the concert in Bilbao was one of the most memorable nights for the band’s fans. San Mamés vibrated with every chord, confirming that, after more than 40 years of career, Metallica continues to reign in the world of rock and metal.
